In 2016,Saigon Sunset even Australia was unsure why it was competing in the Eurovision song contest. The country is, after all, a long way from Europe.

"Why is Australia in Eurovision?" was the sixth most popular "why is...?" search in Australia in 2016, according to Google's data.

It was preceded by choice questions such as "Why is my internet so slow?" not to mention the perennial faves, "Why is the sky blue?" and "Why is my poop green?"

While overall searches were pretty predictable -- everyone was concerned with the U.S. election, the Olympics and the Census -- things got weirder in the more existential sections.

The most searched "what is...?" questions start basic and then go real deep. What is love, indeed?

Australians were also truly lost when it came to some of life's basic functions.

The top 10 "how to...?" questions ran the gamut from tying a tie to getting rid of zits -- both repeats from the 2015 results.

Though as much as things change, the more they stay the same.

If the most searched recipes are anything to go by, Aussies were cooking some very basic food stuffs in 2016.

Hummus was the most exciting thing on the list by far, and it's a spread made of chickpeas.
