The Watch Black Panther Onlinetop Halo teams in the world converged in California to compete for glory and a piece of a $1 million prize pool at the Halo World Championship this past weekend. But it sure didn't look like a $1 million tournament.
One of the most talked about moments from the Halo World Championship wasn't some crazy clutch play or even team OpTic Gaming's unstoppable run through every other team that won them the tournament with ease. It was these really sad pictures shared by a tournament attendee:

Twitter user Frank shared some very depressing and vacant photos of the event, including some shots of the viewing tent with mostly bare bleachers and a bundle of balloons that don't even look particularly excited to be there. He shared them as a reply to Hector "H3cz" Rodriguez, the owner of tournament-winning team OpTic Gaming, who said he was in disbelief upon arriving.
Other users started taking Frank's photos and having some fun with them, as well as sharing their own gems from the event.

While the sad pictures don't show off the entire event -- including the main and side stages where teams were actually competing and where the bulk of the crowd was -- they are still representative of the event as a whole, according to some of the tournament attendees.
Early on Sunday, Rodriguez shared a video on his YouTube channel discussing the HaloWorld Championship and how disappointing the whole event was from his perspective. He said that aside from the viewing tent, the main stage only had three rows of seating for spectators and the side stage could only comfortably seat eight spectators..
Photos provided by Halo developer 343 Industries, who ran the the event alongside tournament organizer ESL, show a crowd that's roughly four rows deep. The developer didn't share any shots of spectators in the viewing tent or the side stage.
Another Twitter user Greenskull shared other shots from the event, also showing the four rows of spectators at the main stage and some small gatherings and lines around food trucks.

These angles aren't nearly as sad as Frank's pictures, but its clear that the venue was incredibly small for a world championship-tier tournament. Instead of being held at a theater or comparable event space like last year's World Championship at Raleigh Studios Hollywood, this event was held at ESL's studios in Burbank, California, with the viewing tent set up in the parking lot.
"The tournament for all accounts has been ran okay, but the venue is what is completely mindblowing to me, that 343 and Halowould allow this to get to this point," Rodriguez said in his video.
This is what the side stage looked like, which Rodriguez showed in his video:
Via GiphyMeanwhile, take a look at the crowd at the 2016 Halo World Championship:
Pro Haloplayer Tyler "Ninja" Blevins, who competed with Luminosity Gaming at this year's World Championship, noted in a tweet that although ESL staff and fire marshals at the event had food provided for them, players participating in the tournament had to buy their own food. This is almost unheard of at top-level epsorts events.
"The Halo players deserve way better than this, man," Rodriguez said. "It's not ESL, ESL obviously -- whatever -- they do good work, they've done good work. This is a Halothing. Halois accountable for who it is that they're hiring to run these tournaments... How do you run your Halochampionships without a crowd? I don't want to say that they don't care but it sure as f-- looks that way."
The prize pool also dropped from $2.5 million to $1 million for this year's event.
"You don't want to go off on this note, you don't to end the season on this note," Rodriguez said.
We reached out to both 343 Industries and ESL about how many people attended the event. We will update the story once we hear back.
