The gunman, Omar Mateen, reportedly pledged allegiance to the Islamic State before the shooting. The group's official news agency then claimed responsibility for the attack and jihadists praised the attacker on Twitter, changing their profile pictures to a photo of Mateen.
Ghost posted tweets from their account such as "I'm gay and I'm proud", "To The Families & Victims of #Orlando We Will Not Forget" and links to gay porn sites. He claimed to have defaced more than 200 Twitter accounts but many of them have been taken down by Twitter.
Profile and background pictures of jihadis or black flags of the Islamic State were replaced by rainbow flags and gay couples in bed.
“Daesh doesn’t like porn,” the hacker, who refused to give his real name, told the Washington Post. “They don’t like women in general. We just started using it to poke fun at them and diminish their presence online.”
