The Scarlett Fay ArchivesApple Watch Series 9 is here, and it's carbon neutral.
At Apple's "Wonderlust" event on Tuesday, the company revealed the new generation of Apple Watch. The Series 9 has been updated with an S9 chip for faster processing power, 18-hour battery life, and a U2 ultra-wideband chip for improved location accuracy for features like Find My tracking. The ultra-wideband chip also integrates with HomePod. It is powered by WatchOS 10, which was released at WWDC 2023 in June.
New to the Series 9 is a one-handed gesture called "double tap." By tapping your finger and thumb together twice, you can stop a timer, launch the smart stack, and answer and end calls. Double tap will be available next month.
Siri got an upgrade with Series 9 too. It is processed on the device, so it doesn't have to ping the cloud for a response. Siri is also integrated with the Health app and will be available later this year.
Invoking Mother Nature in the form of Octavia Spencer, Apple emphasized its push for more environmentally-friendly manufacturing. Series 9 uses 100-percent recycled aluminum in the cases, and its sport loop watch band is made with recycled materials. This year all Apple Watch manufacturing is powered by clean electricity, and packaging is fiber-based in more compact and low-carbon shipping modes. This, plus carbon emissions offset by Apple, means the Series 9 has a net-zero carbon footprint.
Apple is also moving away from leather watch bands, and introduced a leather-esque material called "FineWoven" for its watch bands. Apple is continuing to collaborate with Nike and added new watch bands with Hermes.
The Series 9 debuted a new pale pink in aluminum and also comes in starlight, midnight, silver, (PRODUCT)RED, as well as stainless steel in gold, silver, and graphite cases.
The Apple Watch Series 9 comes in the same 41-millimeter and 45-millimeter size options and costs $399 GPS and $499 for GPS plus cellular connectivity. It is available for preorder today and will be released on Sept. 22. Apple also announced the Apple Watch SE at a lower price at $249.
