UPDATE:Holy crap they're sold out.
I expected ThinkGeek's high-priced NES Classic bundles to linger,Big Thing Chief: The Stolen Wife much like GameStop's did in the months after the micro-console's release. Apparently, the fact that they were discontinued proved to be a huge motivating factor.
ThinkGeek's bundle website published at around 3:20 p.m. ET. and I got word from our own team just a few minutes after 4:20 p.m. ET that none of the bundles were available on the website anymore. A quick check-in with ThinkGeek confirmed it: The NES Classic bundles are gone.
If you got one, I'm very happy for you. If you missed the window but you were willing to shell out for one of the bundles, I'd give eBay a shot. Classics are selling there for around the same price that ThinkGeek's bundles were sold. You won't get the pile of extra swag, of course, but I'd wager that most of you are primarily interested in the console.
ORIGINAL POST FOLLOWS:
Nintendo isn't making the NES Classic anymore, but ThinkGeek has a small hoard of them, ready to sell.
There's just one catch: the $60 price tag is no more. ThinkGeek is bundling its entire NES Classic stock with an assortment of Nintendo swag, with prices ranging from $139.99 to $219.99.
SEE ALSO: Want to pre-order a Super NES Classic? Watch these websitesFor the sake of comparison, let's take a look at the aftermarket NES Classic community on eBay. With the exception of some outlier listings from China -- which may or may not be knock-offs -- most new-in-box Classics are selling for around $200 these days.
We reached out to ThinkGeek and asked why its entire supply of pint-sized Nintendo machines will only be available in swag-filled bundles that, even at their lowest price point, are more than double the Classic's launch price. Here's what the company had to say in a statement:
We're very excited to have received this last allotment of NES Classic Editions, and we want them to land in the hands of true fans and not resellers. We also need to be able to be profitable on the products we sell. So, we've limited them to one per customer and packaged them with a number of our best-selling Nintendo-themed products. Fans have reacted very positively to our Nintendo Switch packages, and we believe we will see a similar reaction to these collections.
This whole situation feels like an attempt on ThinkGeek's part to unload excess inventory (the bundled swag) by tethering it to a popular item (this newly unearthed supply of NES Classics) at a highly inflated price. GameStop, ThinkGeek's parent company, offered similar, lower-priced NES Classic bundles in late 2016. Unsurprisingly, they were some of the last NES Classic listings to be available online.
Now the company is trying to pull the same trick, with the only difference now being we all knowNES Classic is discontinued. That increases the product's perceived value. It's still a $60 piece of hardware, but aftermarket buyers have demonstrated a willingness to pay more.
There's just one problem: ThinkGeek isn't eBay. It's an online retailer. Forcing customers to choose between overpriced, swag-filled bundles or nothing is decidedly anti-consumer. You do you, but I'd stay away.
If you're interested in picking up one of these highly coveted items, you can find all six bundles right here. They're limited to one per customer, and you'll have to be buying from a U.S. address if you want one.
NOTE: Keep trying if that bundle page isn't live yet. We were told 3 p.m. ET on July 25, but there might have been a hiccup on their end.
