It begins in the bedroom with a simple prompt: "hurt me." But instead of responding with an act of physical pain, your imaginary partner says something that cuts you to your core.

You can try to interrupt them, but it just gets worse from there. You're left beseeching them to stop.

The meme has become increasingly popular as people seize the chance to tweet about the things that upset them most. For instance, learning someone you care about doesn't think Ratatouille is that great of a movie, or the fact that your cat might not really love you.

And of course the increasingly short lifespan of a meme means this one is already becoming self aware -- as people on Twitter mock the format and make references to other memes using this structure.

If I had any kind of a psychological background I might think that this meme was some sort of coping mechanism or cry for help. But I don't, so I'll just laugh to keep from crying.
