MUNICH — With Samsung’s Note7 now being permanently discontinued for battery fire issues, sex video chat app many users are looking into alternatives with similar specs, and Huawei has just delivered in style — but deep pockets are a requirement.
The company’s new flagship, launched alongside the standard Huawei Mate 9, has been designed in collaboration with Porsche Design. Its full name is the Porsche Design Huawei Mate 9, but it’s not just a slightly redesigned Mate 9; it is in fact quite a different device. It has a slightly smaller, 5.5-inch AMOLED screen with curved edges and some seriously beefed-up specs, including 6GB of RAM and 256GB of storage memory. Although it’s smaller than the Mate 9’s 5.9-inch screen, it has a higher resolution: 2,560x1,440 pixels.
Design-wise, the phone is a matte, graphite black with a Porsche Design logo accompanying the standard Huawei signature on the back. Judging by Huawei’s promo video at the event, the phone’s curvy edges should somehow mimic the design of Porsche cars, but you’ll have to use some imagination to see that.
Unlike on most Huawei phones, the PD Mate 9 has a fingerprint sensor on the front, built into the home button which also takes over the function of all three standard Android buttons, depending on how you interact with it.
About those curved edges: Don’t expect any additional functionality, as seen on Samsung Note7 or S7 Edge phones; the curvature is subtle and purely aesthetic.
UPDATE: Nov. 3, 2016, 5:18 p.m. CET After some hands-on time with the PD Huawei Mate 9, I have to say that the curved screen edges are barely noticeable. They are nice, but a Note7 or an S7 Edge, this is not. The device feels very solid in the hand, like all high-end Huawei phones, and the black matte look does give it an air of exclusivity, but all in all, it's not that far removed from the regular Mate 9. I've only had a few minutes to try out the device, and it really does feel very fast, but then again, so does the regular Mate 9.
If all this sounds a bit familiar, you’re probably thinking of Xiaomi’s Mi Note 2, a 5.7-inch phone with curved screen edges with similarly mouth-watering specs. Huawei has taken things a bit further, though, since its new phone sports a Leica-branded dual camera on the back, just like the standard Mate 9. It’s the same 20/12-megapixel combo which combines higher resolution, monochrome photo with the color one for increased details and sharpness.
The rest of the specs are same as on the Mate 9: Huawei Kirin 960 chipset paired with the new, Mali G71 GPU, an 8-megapixel selfie cam and a 4,000mAh battery.
Huawei says the Porsche Design Huawei Mate 9 is a limited edition device; it will retail in Europe for 1,395 euro when it arrives in late December. The device will become available in Europe, Asia and Middle East (but not the U.S.) in January 2017. The place will be offered exclusively in Porsche Design Stores as well as select Huawei stores.
